S1 Or S2 Elise For Honda Conversion?

If I were to buy an Elise especially for the purpose of engine conversion, am I better off with an S1 or an S2?
Also what is the go with fitting S1 Exige clams to an S1 Elise - is that a big deal?

Rotrex Honda K20?

I was at Revzone today (Melbourne's most respected Honda Tuners) and amongst other things, they were tuning a K20 there running a Rotrex supercharger. I watched it do a pull of 300kw at the Hubs (about 500hp at the engine) at just 12psi. Very impressive. They are trying to convince me to ditch the Jackson Racing supercharger, drop in stronger internals and switch to a rotrex. Having seen the success some others are having on here with their Toyota engined rotrexes, its an interesting proposition.

Claimed benefits are;
Lower intake temperatures compared to the Jackson Supercharger
More bore boost up high where the honda is revving anyway
More power and torque from about 5000rpm up

Anyone had any experience going down this path?

Cheers,

If You Have Thought About It Do It

My car has been in Sydney over the past few week getting a heart transplant. OMG I reckon if you could get an artificial heart that put as much life into you as the Honda then everyone would be getting them done and you would feel like you were 20 again.

I jumped on the plane yesterday morning 6am flight to Sydney and arrived at 7:30. The trip to West Ryde was interesting with the cab driver telling me all the places not to go in Sydney, great ambassador for you state Those of you that are not aware the engine conversion is now done by Pro Concept, by Joshua who did a brilliant job on the conversion. I arrived at Joshua's workshop at approx 8:40, Sydney traffic is much like Brisbane traffic is now SHITFULL. Dave gave me a rundown on the car and then we went for a quick testdrive through the local streets not really enough to get the entire experience the NEW car had to offer but just a little taste and it was BRILLIANT.

I was on the road back to Brisbae by about 10am and drove into my garage at 8:30 last night. It was a boring drive but on the drive and my drive this morning through the local mountain passes near by my place I discovered a few things:

1/ The reason Lotus never put the K20 into the Elise to start with is because the average punter would crash it and die

2/ Street tyres and K20 do not mix

3/ Redline gear changes never felt so good

4/ I don't think you can wipe the smile off my face, tried this arvo but I will even use the car to pop down the shops now so the smile is always there.

Thanks to Dave and Josh for everything Brilliant Stuff.

Also thanks to Phil who was nice enough to take some photos of my car at different stages of the conversion and send them to me.

Real World Engine Conversion

All these conversions are great, but really how much use are they in the real world? Here's a practical application of engine transplanting, something we can all learn from.

Engine Alternatives Other Than Honda

I have become interested in engine swap alteratives to the (expensive} Honda engine and transmission. There are some "kits" becoming available (eg Sinclaire) to use the Ford Duratech system engines. In particular the 2 litre or the 2.3 litre versions. They apparently use the existing Elise (Rover) transmission to keep the cost down but provide better performance with 100% reliability. Also I have been told that Cosworth (no less) are providing upgrade bits for these engines. Apparently SSC are looking into this and will do a pilot project on an S1 they are importing. Interestingly Mazda (with there apparent link to Ford) use these engines too. So the big question I have is would the engine from the Mazda MPS 190 kw turbo fit into an Elise with the kits available. We just need to wait for a looney to write one off first to get the engine for a reasonable price.

Torque "curve" On A New K20

Anyone who says Honda VTEC motors have no torque down low just has no idea.

The car pulls like a train through the whole rev range. It is as happy sitting at 60km/h in 6th as it is at 160km/h in 4th. With the new generation Haltech ECU the VTEC changeover can be varied according to load and gear. At full throttle mine will change over at about 3,500rpm (the dip at about 70kph on the graph) but at light throttle that changeover will be at about 5,500. Changeover is so smooth you hear it rather than feel it.

The minor dip in the power curve up around 6,000rpm appears to be from resonance, probably in the extractors.

PS, I'm very happy with the final figures but this isn't a pissing contest about horsepower figures or dyno manipulation, nor is it meant to be another K20 vs 2zz debate. It is just an example of how smooth and strong the late model K20 can be all over.

Motorsport With A Honda Conversion

Interested to know if there are any particular motorsport events where you will be excluded because you have an HPE?

Obviously I wouldn't be doing everything straight away and rules can change but it would be nice to know if you are ruling yourself out of anything upfront.

This is what I've thought of so far:

1. Superlap - couldn't run in the clubsprint class so you would be in open at a minimum (even for a registered street car)

2. Targa Tasmania?

3. Mount Buller?

4. ATC - should be ok but probably in the motorsport category

5. I'm guessing the 12 hour would be a no go?

6. What supersprint series could you compete in?

7. What grass roots door-to-door racing could you compete in?

My Dyno Sheet ........

had the car tuned at pulse racing and just got it back . there was something happening at about 4500ish , didnt feel quite right , so that affected the on road drivability especially at lower speeds / revs . the aim of the tune was to sort that and see what was happening . and that has been achieved with a vengence .

as you can see the vtec point is now around 3000ish and the flat spot is barely noticeable there as its now at slow road speeds . the power is delivered otherwise as flat as a tack .. smooth smooth smooth . check how flat the line is . many thanks to paul at pulse who is now having a look at the evo for an E85 map .

btw , the prior evo map with exhaust , ecu , increased boost was 204kwatw . and this is 216kwatw . and the evo weighed twice as much .......

standard this car had 120hp at engine . you would know how the figures convert better than i , but has it got 330hp at the engine ??

Couple Of Honda Engine Questions

I thought I would get the ball rolling with the Honda discussions.

By the way thanks to you guys who set this up, good to see there is a place to talk about cars again.

I have seen a few different reference to Honda engines in the elise such as the K20, K20A, K20AZ or something like that K24. To the guys in the know are there major difference in these engines or are they just evolutions of the same engine, more importantly what is your opinion on the best one for the Lotus.

Thanks

There are now quite a few Elises and Exiges on the roads and racetracks of Aus sporting engines that are not factory fitted..

This sub-section is for owners of these cars and those interested in finding out more about them. It is not a an area for advertising conversion services etc and it is certainly not an area for Honda vs Toyota vs Rover vs whatever slanging matches.

There are several different common swaps here and overseas and I'm sure each owner will explore different options and enhancements.
