Hi,

Wanting to get a basic data logger so I can be all nerdy after the odd trackday. Just want simple parameters like x,y position, orientation, speed, forces etc. Would particularly like a product that can overlay output on a diagram of the track (i.e., speed, forces, driving line etc.). Does the vBox Mini do all this? Are there better products? How much and where's best to buy?

I'll Be There Next Year, Like A Shot

All weekend at Wakefield, all that I saw was Lotus grins. Such a hoot.

Mike Basquil did a sterling job, not only organising a Lotus event for us on Sunday following the CMC supersprint, but then ensuring that there were enough entries to make it viable. As a result of his efforts we had a weekend of motorsport that could not be bettered.

Onya Mike, it was a stupendous effort and a superb weekend.

We snagged a Lotus only section of paddock carports, and other groups could only look on in envy at the easy, relaxed atmosphere of fun and camaraderie.

Our group included 3 interstate visitors who came up from the deep South because they could not miss an entire weekend of good motorsport, and added to a most excellent fun weekend by their company. Well done and thanks for coming to David, Greg and Damien. We had lots of sparkle, 'cos they all brought their ladies along and putting up with Ashton was made easier 'cos Caroline came. I'll have no comments about this, as Nicki came too. And just to show what a fun outing it was, James - the proud father of brand new twins - set a new record by joining us for most of the day on Saturday; then rushing back to Sydney to practice nappy duty. Legendary stuff, James, we salute and congratulate you.

On track, there was a fine gaggle of S1's, S2's, supercharged, NA, spread amongst Toyo engines, Rover engines and of course, Honda engines.

Greg soon worked Wakefield out and set scorching times in the ex Mackie S1 supercharged Honda Exige. Each day there were new PB's in our group and Barry M got quicker and quicker as did Phil the Banzai. Damien moved steadily faster and faster too and proclaimed Wakefield to be the best track he's driven.

Recognising the talent and skill in our Lotus group, the CMC organisers sent us out first up on Saturday when the track was cold and still wet. It was hilarious, there were no quick times but lots of fast heart rates. Most of the field were, well, in the field. Later in the day things improved and Greg was first Lotus, probably around p4 of 105 entrants. The results aren't up yet so I can't confirm this.

Having seen the blinding display of skill on Saturday, would you believe that the organisers sent the Lotus group out first thing again on Sunday. Roosters had not yet crowed and we were out on the track. Sunday was a clear day, but at sparrow's there was zero traction until we'd scrubbed thru the ice. With loads of torque, I was able to get wheelspin in third.

Although our event was ostensibly a regularity event, Nicki's comment from the spectator stand was that it was clear that this was a bunch of good mates out having a fine hoon together.

The excellent spirit and fun time in the Lotus only event, was brought home by an incident that sidelined David M in the All British race when he was leading. The incident was both unnecessary and foolish and put an end to his fine drive. Ashton is to be commended for some straight talking after the race. During this conversation I was sure that Ashton was going to invite a certain Triumph driver to step behind the carports for a moment of reflection but fortunately the Triumph person apologised before this became necessary.

The Lotus group knows one another, is considerate of each other, and no one wants to ding another's car so we fanged around to our heart's content, learnt a whole lot, set lots of new Personal Bests and generally had an excellent old time.

Rex finished a fine 3rd in the regularity event, I'm uncertain who came in second. The benefit of my Honda conversion became evident when all I did all day was put in some petrol, start the car, drive the wheels off it and have a ball. During the day at different times I had my rear view mirror full of Barry, Rex and Banzai, but the Honda proved very strong and tractable and now that the handling is improving steadily, it was simply a matter of turning up the volume. Greg, however, proved elusive and my very best efforts still saw him disappearing into the sunset.

When I came to load up my car, someone had put a trophy on my seat. As Phil said, old age and treachery . . . . . .

This was interesting. The course officials decided to give us a glimpse of motor racing after "End Oil" (date tba). We were expecting a Hydrogen Powered car race, but got this instead. I have to say, that whilst it was relatively friendly to the environment, the lap times were frankly, crap.

At What Cost A Race Weekend?

Hi guys

As some of you know, I've been in Hong Kong for a few months but my car is back at home in cotton wool.

I have started lurking on the HK Lotus owners' forum, where I've read the following rent-a-drive offer (for various dates, but includes the A1 GP round here in December). The offer is made by a guy who is a regular on that forum and owns a couple of Lotus race cars, so by all accounts should be a "good egg" and a professional operator.

I have my own gut-feeling, but I was hoping for a considered opinion from those of you with experience of preparing (budgeting and paying for) race weekends ... like Mark, Dave, Tim, Peter, Greg, Angelo, Arthur etc .... as to whether or not you think it represents good value for money or not. Bear in mind that HK 10,000 at the moment buys around AUD 1,500.

I am asking the question on the assumption that I drive conservatively and bring the car home unscathed .... though any comments on the (given recent events, not-to-be-ignored) risk and cost of crash damage are obviously welcome. In this regard my experience includes track-days, super-sprints, autokhana and hill-climbs but, hitherto, no wheel to wheel racing.

Given the breakdown is reasonably comprehensive, if your answer is "tell 'im he's dreamin'", I'd be interested to hear which bits you think are over-budgeted and why.

To head off thread-drift .... to be perfectly frank and with no offence intended, I am mainly interested in the thoughts of folk on here with experience actually costing and doing this as opposed to just views of random punters on whether or not they personally would do it or not, how many beers that would buy or whether or not something else would cost less and be more fun.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

2010 Wakefield Park 6 Hour Relay Regularity 10 – 11 July

For all those that wanted to go to Phillip Island but missed the deadline, here's the second chance...at Wakefield Park...so, all you budding Team Managers, here's the chance for Gold

The Wakefield Park 6 Hour Relay Regularity is a motorsports event specifically formulated to give club members or individuals a chance to form teams of drivers and pit crew to compete against other teams – not as a race but rather as a Regularity styled event. Therefore outright speed is not the major factor in winning.
•	Each team must consist of a minimum of 3 cars and 4 drivers, up to a maximum of 6 cars and 6 drivers.
•	Each team driver nominates a target lap time which they believe can be consistently maintained.
•	If the driver goes quicker than their nominated lap time, the lap doesn’t count, if they achieve their nominated lap time, they get the lap plus a bonus lap and if they are slower than their nominated time, they only receive the lap.

Most cars are eligible (open wheel cars not accepted) and only require normal safety equipment needed at a sprint meeting (ref. The Supplementary Regulations for the event).

The event is open to all holders of AASA Club Licenses, Wakefield Park Licenses, and CAMS L2s Licenses.

Circuit Information - Wakefield Park is a 2.2km racing circuit located 2 hours drive from Sydney and about 1 hour from Canberra, and is positioned 10km south of Goulburn on 130 acres of cleared land. There are no trees or natural obstacles near the track. Safety is paramount and ripple strips, tyre walls and gravel traps have been positioned so as to make Wakefield a very safe circuit on which to run any type of motorsport event.

Vic State Racing

MGCC are running this round of the State Series at Sandown Pk. It is a two day meeting with extra pratice available on the Friday at extra cost. The Entry fee is $380 FMM. Currently they are 45 cars less than is required to break even for the meeting (they have 175 entries). The strongest class is MG and Invited British Sports Cars at 26 cars. Some of the other classes are very low.

As some of you are aware I ran my Elise (S1) at Winton recently as an Invited British Sports car in the MG class. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I also made sure that I did not get in the way of any MGs that were competing for their class and outright pointscore. This was appreciated and thus I have entered and been accepted at the Sandown round.

As overall entries are down I have suggested to the MG group that they might like to invite a few more Elises. The response was not negative given the state of entries overall.

So if you have a Race Licence (not a sprint licence), and a car that is log-booked please be in contact with me and I will try and get you an Invitation to enter the Sandown Round.

My tele no is 03 95341426 if you want to ask any questions (not tonight as I am about to depart for dinner, but anytime tomorrow is fine. I am but the first filter.

Questions on here are fine any time.

Superlap Time Attack 21/22 May

As most of you will be aware Dave has kindly lent me Wombat 2 to compete in the Superlap time attack event on 21/22 May. Check out www.superlap.com.au if you aren't aware of what this is about. Every time I see a news update about the performance of the local cars as well as the cars coming out for this event from Japan and the USA I need to go and have a nervous visit to the bathroom...

In addition to Dave kindly lending me a car the good guys at Kumho have agreed to provide sets of their V70A series tyres at a discount to normal price. With the prospect of needing to go through a few sets of tyres over this weekend in an effort to keep up with the big budget competition I am wanting to see if any of you have interest in buying slightly used sets of tyres at a discount to new tyre price. When I say slightly used I mean probably soemwhere between 5 and 10 laps as if I can find enough of you wanting to take up this offer I will throw new tyres at the car every time we go out and expect to be out each time for between 5 and 10 laps.

The tyres in question are soft compound 205/45R16 V70A (front) and 235/45R17 V70A (rear) with cost for a slightly used set being $990 (RRP of $1,712 so I am told). Send me a PM if interested.

J&s Motorsport At Wakefield Park

J&S Motorsport had a big contingent entered this weekend at Round 2 of the NSW State Championship at Wakefield Park. Returning in his stunning Class A car was Justin Levis, the Hoff was back in his Class B car after a disappointing weekend at Eastern Creek (qualified with a cracking time only to have his weekend ruined in turn two of race 1 by a spinning Porsche), as well as the debut of a very promising young fellow called Bad Max (so called for his tendancy to be puffing on a winnie red while sitting on the dummy grid) who was driving a pristine, "only ever driven to church on Sunday's and in an occasional wedding procession" Silver Lotus with a std Rover engine and road tyres in class 2F. Also debuting as a driver-manager was a muppet who wouldn't take the headset off all weekend. Come back quick Roscoe before this bloke thinks he is Ron Dennis...

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/peter_c_ross/JandS%20Racing/IMG_2647.jpg

I have sent some photos of the weekend to Peter Ross in the hope he can upload them for me (I have re-sized them and still they won't upload) and you will see in those what stunning cars J&S have turned out yet again. And they're not just pretty looking cars, Justin has turned in times in the 61 sec bracket in his first time back in a car after over a year off and with no test days other than practice at Wakefield Park. Hoffie had an up and down weekend with patches of very quick driving interspersed with some concentration lapses but did enough to show that he is quick when he is in the zone. Bad Max was simply stunning in his debut with a couple of passing manoeuvres into the last corner before the main straight that were text book, posting a lap time of 1 min 10 secs in the process (all on road tyres and with some pesky MX5s trying to slow him down) and improving on his qualifying time by 2 seconds during the race.

Whilst not part of the J&S team, its worth noting Anthony Soole's great results as well; very quick and very consistent to be a clear 3rd outright all weekend. Finally, bad luck for Andrew McPherson who had car troubles and wasn't able to return after qualifying but who also looked like being in the hunt with Sooley and Hoff based on qualifying times.

Stay tuned for Eastern Creek at the end of May where there should be a record field of Lotuses entered for the one hour event. I'm not certain if everyone is coming but there is potential for a massive field as follows:

Class A
Justin Levis - SC HPE
Tim Mackie - SC HPE
David Mackie - SC HPE
Anthony Soole - SC Toyo
Mark O'Connor - SC Toyo (maybe the new twins mean Mark won't be able to make it)
Tim Poulton - SC Toyo
Andrew McPherson - SC Toyo
Angelo Lazaris - Turbo Toyo
Driver TBA - SC HPE

Class B
Simon Hogg - NA HPE
Arthur Magaitis - NA HPE
Craig Drury - NA HPE
Brad Douglas - Rover K Series
Driver TBA - NA HPE

Class C
Mark Douglas - Rover K

Class 2F
Bad Max - Rover K

That's 16 and I haven't counted anyone from Queensland as yet so put 29/30 May in your diary.

Motorkhana At Eastern Creek

The BANZAImobile makes its Honda motorsport debut at a motorkhana this Saturday. There are a few spots left if anyone is interested in joining the low cost, low stress, low risk fun on the Eastern Creek skidpan.

Cost is $60 for the day + CAMS license if you don't have one. The event is being run by the Lower Blue Mountains Christian Car Club and these are good, fun days. At the end of the day we set up a slalom elimination shoot out which is always fun and Lotus do well.

A video taster:

Entry and supp regs attached. Scrutineering from 8am and driving from 9.30

For those who have never done a motorkhana, the idea is that you drive a short course marked out by flags. The lowest accumulated time wins the day. Hitting a flag, going the wrong way or overshooting a garage adds penalties to your time. Big horsepower is definitely not as advantageous as good grip and handling. Most of the runs last between 20 and 50 seconds and are in first or second gear.

This is also one event where the forecast of rain just adds to the sideways fun. Another twist with this event is that you are usually paired up with another driver. You are their passenger, they are yours.

James C as a spectator but I reckon you should give the car a run just so we can get some figures.

If we can get 20 starters we can have our own lane to ensure most of our runs are against each other.

Who else is up for a night of fun? Patrick, Anthony (CF Audi Turbo), Syd (would they let you run the Bentley?) Doc, James, Eric x 2, Winno, Alvin, Ian A?

I'd really like to collect data on a wide cross section of cars.

The lack of corners definitely does not reduce the fun quotient.
If someone can bring a regular car so we have somewhere to store stuff that would be really good.

I have a load of pictures primarily around the "Pits de Mackay", and the "Pits de O'Conner y Poulton".
My plan is to put these on DVD and send them.
Assuming that everyone is happy with all the photos on 1 DVD, then I'll do RAW (.DNG) and JPEG.

If you want a set PM me and I'll put a confirmation list together and post that before sending...
Most likely this weekend (or later). Earlier if only RAW is needed, but the pC types rarely can read .DNG .

I don't know if they are any good - usually I get some dust spots when I change lenses often - might need Easton if there are any that seem special.
Usually not too many in the the good category.

Australian Gt @ F1 Albert Park

Well, Scuffers and I have been busy for the past two weeks preparing Wombat 1 and 2 for Round 2 of the Australian GT Championship at Albert Park next weekend.

Tim's car has had a complete pull down and rebuild using new EliseParts wishbones, upright, Quantum dampers and new body panels so it is basically the same spec as my car that we finished in November.

Simon and Tim are at Wakefield now testing - so far it is impressive!

On Monday we load the cars into the truck and head for Melbourne.

I have cameras installed in the cars and we have a team photographer and media liaison officer who will endeavour to keep this thread up to date with photos, video and updates over the 4 days. Would be nice to get a team shot with Lotus F1...... yeah right.

I am very excited and full of nerves but I'm hoping it will be a fun adventure.

On our return on Monday we have 2 days to prepare the cars before we leave for FOSC Bathurst the next weekend.

Hoggy will be out there Porker-baiting, and I have it on good authority that Martha is competing too, in his newly liveried S1.
Saturday sees the boys qualifying at 9 and racing at about 1. Sunday has race 2 at 9 and race 3 at about 1 again.

Catch Cans

3 questions

I am a bit nervous about drilling into the firewall, which would likely be into the fuel tank, or the firewall may not be a very structurally sound piece... Dunno.

1) Where would a remote oil reservoir be mounted on a Rover'ed S2?

2) Where would a fuel swirl tank be mounted?
And how do those work? - does the fuel get pumped to the tank, and then boosted out of the tank by another pump to the fuel rail?
Assuming that I need a boosting fuel pump, then what pump is used for that?

3) How about a water tank (mounting?).
If I use an electric pump (like the Craig Davies) for post engine running, or pre engine running, do they have some sort check valve to prevent flow through them?
Or can they be mounded in-line, and have water flow through it from the standard water pump, when the electric pump is not powered?

Following on from a converstion at the LCQ meeting, the following photo shows the start of the new track, showing where it branches off the existing circuit.

I believe this is at a point just after the right-left kink that leads to the S's...

http://www.morganparkraceway.com.au/picts/c1.jpg

The older bitumen shown is the start of the sharp right turn up over the crest, just after the right-left kink...

The following shot has me interested, now I look closely:

http://www.morganparkraceway.com.au/picts/c6.jpg

This shows the control tower at the very top left corner. So the main straight starts with a curve left to get onto it!!! Must be a beauty of a right-hand hairpin immediately prior to this point!

Below is my guess at the design:

Help! Flaggies Needed At Wakefield 6Th February

Guys

The following plea for help is from Maurice Blackwood:

Happy New Year to you all
Our supersprint event for the CSCA Championships is on Saturday 6th February at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn
That's less than two weeks away!!
We need help on the dummy grid, the start/finish line and on the 4 flag points.
Please could you respond if you are able to help with any or all of the following time slots:
8.30-11.30
11.30-2.00
2.00-4.30

The perks? Well, lunch is provided, you will earn the eternal gratitude of all those driving on the day, and you get to black flag the guys you don't like (OK, maybe not!) but best of all you get to experience first hand what supersprits are all about

If you are thinking of sprinting either this year or next, this is a great way to see what a day looks like (or maybe you would just like to help us out )
Please feel free to bring a friend if you would like to (and we may be able to double you up on a flag point).

The address if you've not been to Wakefield before is
4770 Braidwood Road, Goulburn, NSW or click here

If you can help out, please could you email Maurice on mozziebATisprDOTnetDOTau or call him on 0417218462

Many thanks in advance to all that are prepared to do this - and if you can bring the Elise down, we can go for a photo-shoot to beat the 27 cars we had at Oran Park four years ago!

Series 1 Taxi, With New Honda Engine

Well, after my K series suffered its 3rd fatality (3 very expensive explosions)I took the plunge. Dave M got my Honda conversion parts here in record time, and Jeff Lotonda did the transplant equally fast.

Last night, at Eastern Creek was the first time that I drove the car with its new engine other than to Pizza night and it was a revelation. With my son here on a visit from overseas and sharing the drive, the only time the car stopped was to change drivers and add fuel. Just like a taxi. Despite the typical far west high summer temperature, and some fairly spirited driving, the car never got hot, never spluttered once, and within a few laps I was quite at home and enjoying the seemingly unstoppable urge and the close ratio box.

Other than arriving at turn two rather faster than I thought I was going and generating some impressive tyre smoke (brain fade, my fault), the car felt well balanced, fast and reliable. I was plumb worn out while the taxi was enjoying whatever we could throw at it, and coming back for more. It was really very impressive and great fun.

My sincere thanks to Dave and to Jeff for putting it all together in record time. Job well done!

Track Days

Hi,

Need some pointers on Sydney track-days. I've done a number of days in the UK and found them dead easy to organise. You picks your track and event organiser, pays your £200, and you gets a full day of open pit lane driving. Pay a bit more and you're mixing it with 911s, pay a bit less and you're driving with modded Astras. Couldn't be simpler.

But, having just arrived in Sydney I'm finding the scene here a bit confusing. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places but all I can find are a couple of organisers who seem to charge a fortune for 10-minutes-in-the-hour events.

So some advice needed please. Who are the trusted event organisers? Which events are best (most track time, best price, friendliest atmosphere)? Somebody told me I need to belong to a club to do track days in Oz, but that doesn't sound right? Seen some discussion on here about events, but don't know if they're for relatively inexperienced all-comers like me...

TIA!!

Atc Victoria

Hi Guys,

For those of you that didn't get the ATC newsletter today, here it is. If you would like to get them you can subscribe on our website here.

First up for 2010 is ATC Victoria to be held over the weekend of April 10 and 11 and based in the rural city of Shepparton. Places are filling fast with 40% of the available places already filled.

The Victorian event will see competitors participating at four venues across a very busy two days.

Friday evening will see competitors arrive in Shepparton for registration, scrutiny and socialising in preparation for a huge weekend of motorsport.

On Saturday, after an early breakfast/drivers briefing at the Park Lake Motor Inn (temporary Rally HQ), drivers will head to the DECA Driver Training centre where a huge skid pan with a fun and fast motorkhana awaits.

On the way over to the very popular and challenging ‘Back Circuit’ hill climb we will squeeze in a short but very sweet auto test. The drivers will get to repeat these events before heading off to Winton.

The first challenge at Winton will test how quickly drivers can pilot their cars around the short circuit. There will be just enough time to get your breath back to tackle the witches’ hats strategically placed at the back of the track. Hopefully your eye will be in by now, as the long circuit will be next; a challenging test of skill and endurance that provides a perfect bookend to the Winton experience.

Next up will be the absolute highlight of the weekend - the Super Special Stage to be held in the heart of Shepparton. The Showgrounds venue offers a huge new piece of bitumen, light towers, a grandstand seating 600 enthusiastic locals and two identical motorkhana courses. The Super Special Stage will provide a unique opportunity to not only race the clock, but also a fellow competitor who will be lined up on the neighbouring course, itching to take you on and win valuable boasting rights. Try hard to focus on the hats and not that other car in the corner of your eye. Oh, and don’t let the crowd down; they’ll be cheering for you!

What a day! Time for a quick shower and then you’ll be off to the official ATC dinner at Cellar 47 to tell your mates (and anyone else who’ll listen) how fast you were.

Sunday will see the event head south, with competitors grabbing breakfast on the way to the revered Broadford raceway, a venue that is rarely used for competition. You’ll have only a few events on this very exciting circuit to make up the points you may need to move up the leader board.

The weekend will conclude with trophy presentations – to the victors go the spoils!

The $990 cost per driver includes:

CAMS fee
Breakfasts and lunches
Official ATC dinner on the Saturday night
Event merchandise
Trophies

This event is strictly limited to the first 90 drivers registered and paid. Click here to register now and avoid disappointment.

Hey guys, as most of you will have seen I put my Exige up for sale on the other site. Had a couple of tyre kickers but no real action.

I agonised over what price to put on it. I settled on $75k but I'm interested to know what this forum thinks. It's an S2 Exige with the Lotus Sport 240 blower kit and a Larini exhaust. Owes me well over $100k but after 4 years one has to be realistic. Question is, am I being realistic >?
